Below the belt

Meaning: An unfair, underhand tactic.

Origin:
The London Prize Ring Rules were drafted by the boxer Jack Broughton in 1743. These included:

"That no person is to hit his Adversary when he is down, or seize him by the ham, the breeches, or any part below the waist a man on his knees to be reckoned down."

The rules were updated later and eventually superseded by the Marquis of Queensbury Rules in 1867, which form the basis of the rules for modern day boxing.

Oddly, although the rules were British, the term 'below the belt' appears first in the USA. Here's an early example from the New York Daily-Times, June 1853:

"... he will always respect that noble rule of pugilistic chivalry and 'never strike below the belt'."

A very varied range of photographs on a subject I was glad I didn't have to take a photograph for Wink You all did a great job,

I think that Chris and I, as administrators, will ban the word Marmite or any photographs containing Marmite LOL - that shot was definately below the belt!

But the winning shot from tonight made me go through several emotions when I saw it from oh my god, to having a good laugh at it.

So tonight's winner - and I don't think I'll ask him to prove if he has red pants or not.. is ....

Andy Polakowski

Andy will get to choose the next challenge subject on December the 9th

Thanks for taking part everyone Smile
